The Coal Authority is a non-departmental public body of the UK government responsible for managing the legacy of coal mining in Great Britain.
It owns the vast majority of unworked coal in the country, as well as the rights to mine it, and it also has a responsibility to ensure the safe and sustainable management of former coal mine workings.
